One Book One School
The World According to Humphrey
by Betty G. Birney
A new Liberty Corner School program this school year is our One Book One School program. Each classroom received a copy of
The World According to Humphrey. Our goal for this program is to develop common experiences for all LCS students. The Humphrey books are about the perspective of a character and how he learns that everyone is different and can learn and grow. It is also about kindness and helping others. Each class has read two chapters a week and our Kids For Character Committee (KFC) read Humphrey questions on Wednesday over the PA. During our last assembly members of KFC acted out skits from The World According to Humphrey to highlight lessons the students learned from the main character, Humphrey. The students were also introduced to the next text LCS will be reading, Friendship According to Humphrey.
Careful selection of core reading books and character-themed One Book One School titles unite to reinforce messages of character and how those messages relate personally to us. Conversations about self advocacy, self-control, and supporting peers emphasize ethical decision making and “doing the right thing” because it is part of our character DNA.
